Dog dermatitis is one of the most commonly found infections in canines around the world and it causes dog dry skin issues. The term refers to the medical condition wherein an infection occurs on the skin of the dog. The infection can take form in a number of ways, ranging from inflamed itchy skin to scaly, dry patches. Dog dermatitis is not only unpleasant and gives off a bad odor; it is also acutely uncomfortable and painful for the dog. Preventing and curing the condition are important to keep your pet looking and feeling good. If the condition is not treated immediately it can escalate and become much more aggravated and cause damage to the dog’s health. Dermatitis occurs in a number of forms. Dogs are seen to be affected by different forms of the condition based on what specific trigger they react to such as dog dry skin or itchy skin. Some kinds of dermatitis are environmental dermatitis, nutritional dermatitis, flea allergy dermatitis, and canine atopy. Canine atopy is the most common form of dermatitis and environmental dermatitis is a manifestation of the same. The condition is caused when the dog suffers an allergic reaction to some element of the environment such as a particular plant, dirt or grass. Flea allergy dog dermatitis is caused when the dog reacts to a flea bite. The actual cause of the condition is the saliva of the flea which causes the skin to become sore, inflamed and red. The portions affected are easily noticeable as they turn red, lose hair and the dog needs to itch and bite it constantly. Nutritional dermatitis occurs when the animal does not receive the diet it needs. This condition usually begins with the dog’s coat losing luster and goes on to become a problematic skin condition. Dog Dermatitis in its different forms can be recognized by symptoms such as itching and biting at specific spots, skin that is red, sore and inflamed as well as other effects such as runny eyes and nose and a general decrease in levels of energy.

Dermatitis, as mentioned, can be triggered by a number of factors and cause many issues such as dog dry skin and itching. To be able to accurately diagnose the cause of the condition in your pet and treat it effectively, it is important to take the animal to a vet. Some of the common causes of the infection are flea bites, respiratory infections, digestive problems, allergic reactions, skin cancers, sunburns, reactions to medicines, bacterial and fungal infections and even a change in diet. It has also been observed that some breeds of dogs are more susceptible to the condition than others.

Treating dermatitis is dependant on what causes the infection. An allergic dog can react well to a dog dermatitis shampoo but not improve with medication. Conversely, your pet might need a prescribed diet and nutritional care instead of cosmetic treatment which will not help with dog dry skin problems. To be able to manage the problem effectively it is essential to trace the root cause of it because this is where the problem begins and is your pet’s vulnerable point.

When we first noticed the dandruff we though it was stress, as this sometimes would cause flaking on his coat. But then the dandruff  and flaking just kept getting worse, and now he has very dry skin and is always itching his paws and and belly. Do you think we are looking at dog dandruff, or perhaps skin allergies?

Assuming that it is dandruff on his skin, what treatment, or diet would be best. Is there a lotion or shampoo that we can use to clear it up?
