Veterinarians have used them to help treat dog allergies which is still being done now. Only up until recently that experts found the different health benefits of fish oil. Fish oil supplements give the same great health benefits for dogs as it does for humans. They can help boost the immune system of people’s dogs and keep them active for a long time.

What causes canine hot spots

Hot spots (acute moist dermatitis) on dogs are generally created by a dog chewing and scratching at an irritated area on the body until it is red, and /or bleeding. These hot spots on dogs are usually about 1 to 4 inches in size and are generally warm, swollen, painful, and can sometimes contain a foul odor and pus. Hair in the area is loss, these spots can develop quickly.

What causes hot spots on dogs is not a simple answer; there are many different things that could contribute to the irritation. Among the possibilities on the list are flea bites; possibly due to the irritating nature of the saliva.

Poor grooming or neglect can be a contributing factor of hot spots as well. Never washing or grooming a dog; especially one with long hair, can leave irritating substances like dirt that can cause problems for the animal. Just as proper hygiene is important for us, it’s just as important for our pets. Though hot spots are not breed specific, they do appear more on dogs with longer hair. Hairy, floppy ears; like on a Golden Retriever are prone to these type of sores on their ear flaps.

Skin Problems and Grooming with Hot Spots

Dogs that are neglected emotionally will often chew at their fur out of boredom. In time this can create hot spots. Providing proper care both physically and emotionally and giving routine checks and treatments for fleas will help prevent most causes of hot spots, and benefit your canine friend greatly.

If all precautions have been taken and your animal is still affected there are things that can be done. To help reduce the infection of the spot, peroxide (applied every two hours) and a dose of antibiotics is recommended. If you prefer a more natural approach, Eucalyptus or menthol can be applied to the area to manage the infection and help sooth the area. Apple cider vinegar can help control the itching; which will allow the skin to heal without the animal making it worst by digging at it. Or if the area is on the neck, a wider dog collar can be used to help protect the area.

Understanding and Treating Different Types of Mange in Dogs Skin and Coat

If Fido has been scratching himself a lot lately, he may have contracted a case of canine mange, which if left untreated could become a serious, in some cases, even lethal problem. Dog mange is a parasitic condition involving tiny, sometimes microscopic, spider-like creatures that burrow into your pet’s skin to lay their eggs and reproduce themselves. There are four basic types of mange in dogs that can infest your pet, some of which can be highly contagious to both other pets and humans.

• Demodectic mange is also known as “Red Mange.” Caused by the Demodex canis mite, it is most common in puppies. In fact, this little critter is commonly found in the hair follicles and pretty harmless. However, stress, poor nutrition or other factors that weaken the immune system can allow an infestation that may first appear as a thinning of hair around the eyes, corners of the mouth and front legs. Itching, scaling and pustules may be the result. Without spreading, the condition usually clears up untreated in as little as three months. If it spreads across the body, untreated demodectic mange in dogs can cause severe pain, enlarged lymph nodes and even death.

• Sarcoptic mange or scabies is caused by the microscopic Sarcoptes scabiei canis mite. Your pet will scratch ferociously to deal with intense itching. This may cause secondary infections requiring additional treatment. Other scabies symptoms include crusty ear tips and hair loss. Appropriate sarcoptic mange treatment is important to prevent this highly contagious condition from spreading to other dogs and humans. The animal must be isolated and its bed and environment treated as part of the sarcoptic mange treatment to destroy all scabies infestation.

More information on canine mites and mange on a dogs skin

• Cheyletiellosis mange is caused by the Cheyletiella yasguri mite. Puppies are more apt to be infected than adult dogs, especially those suffering from poor nutrition. Also called the “walking dandruff disease,” you can literally see the “dandruff” moving along the dog’s body. Cheyletiellosis is also highly contagious to pets and people.

• Ear mites are the result of an infestation of the Otodectes cynotis mite, of which there are many varieties. Your dog will be vigorously shaking his head or scratching his ears to rid himself of the itching. Ear canals may begin to bleed and the ears will appear to have “coffee grounds” in them. However, these mites can also live successfully on the tail and feet of your dog. All pets will need to be treated for canine mange, but the environment is not as at risk. Left unattended, ear mites can do damage to your dog’s ear drums and even cause eventual deafness.

Successful treatment involves addressing both the present infestation with natural, chemical-free medicated shampoos and sprays and strengthening your pet’s weakened immune system to prevent recurring attacks. Minimizing the stress in your dog’s life and ensuring a healthy, nutritious diet, including supplements if necessary, is the best way to prevent mange in dogs from starting in the first place.

What are the different types of Mange on Dogs?

Everyone has heard a dog referred to as a “mangy mutt” but not many people stop to think where this phrase actually came from. A true mangy mutt is actually a dog that is infected with mange.

So what exactly is mange on dogs?

In short, mange is an infestation of mites in the dogs skin. There are four types of dog mange: demodectic mange, sarcoptic mange, Cheyletiellosis, and ear mites.

Demodectic mange, also called Demodicosis, most commonly affects puppies, though it does occasionally manifest itself in older dogs as well. It’s caused by a microscopic mite that attacks the skin. Actually, this type mite is commonly found on dogs, but doesn’t usually cause an infestation (aka – mange on dogs)unless the dog’s skin immune system is weakened in some way. Demodectic mange in dogs can be localized, meaning that it only affects a few parts of the dog. It can be generalized, meaning that it occurs all over. It can also affect just the paws of the dog.

Common forms of Canine Mange

Sarcoptic mange, also known as scabies, can affect both dogs and humans. The mites live on the skin, and after they mate, the female burrows inside the skin, laying as she goes. When the eggs hatch into larvae, they make their way to the surface of the skin, grow into adults, and then subsequently mate and the cycle begins all over again.

Cheyletiellosis, also called walking dandruff, is a highly contagious form of mange. It is most characterized by the flaky, scaly patches of skin on the dog. In fact, it’s called walking dandruff, because a close examination of the dog’s skin will show small white flakes that move around. It’s most commonly found in puppy mills and other places where large numbers of dogs are kept together without the proper sanitation.

Ear mites are tiny spider-like mites that attack the ears in dogs, as the name implies. Typically they prefer to live and breed in the ear canal, but they can spread. Dogs with long, floppy ears, such as Cocker Spaniels, tend to be more prone to this type of mite. These mites cause ear infections. They feed on skin and wax, and as they burrow deeper, the dog’s natural immune system responds to the inflammation by producing more wax. While this type of mange on dogs does not occur on the skin, it is indeed a form of mange. All types of dog mange are characterized by itchy skin, which in some cases is actually painful and will cause the dog to lick, bite, and scratch himself raw. A dog infected with mange is usually miserable and unhappy.

Mange in dogs & Dog Lice Treatment Methods

The most obvious and probably important method of mange in dogs and lice treatment is grooming. Lice, unlike fleas, are sluggish and almost never move but are easily transferable through direct contact with infected dogs. And the need for proper grooming can never be emphasized more. Among other dog lice treatment methods, those that involve regular grooming in dogs are effective and safe ways to lessen the complications lice pose on the health and well-being of your beloved pets. Mange on dogs skin can also be treated much like mites and lice.

Lice, mites and demodex mange on dogs have sturdy claws on their legs which help them cling stubbornly to hair shafts. Scabies and bites, not even vigorous scratching can loosen them up. They are also incapable of surviving outside of a dog host, unlike fleas, and are smaller though much easier to spot due to their lighter color. Fleas also tend to move faster than lice. Despite all these differences between pests, however, they can both be eliminated with much the same dog lice treatment methods. Brushing a dog’s coat with a flea comb can help remove both dead and living lice. Of course, this dog lice treatment method is not enough if you want to completely rid your dog of lice.

Regularly treating a dog to a bath with natural dog shampoo can make it less susceptible to invasion by various pests like lice, ticks, mange on dogs skin and fleas. Dog lice prefer dirty and oily fur, and thus will make no business out of a well-groomed dog’s silky, and squeaky clean locks. Well-nourished dogs also do not contract pest, so it is beneficial to get your dog on a proper dog diet to help keep his immune system active enough to fight off lice infestation.

Mites and Scabies | Dog Mange Remedies and Symptoms

Proper nourishment can also help in regaining melanin in dog’s skin by shedding off the dead epidermal skin, hence getting rid of biting lice in the process. That said, there are two types of lice that may be contracted by dogs: the biting lice, mange on dog, which feed on dead skin; and the sucking lice which feed on blood. Biting lice can be eradicated by getting rid of their source of nutrients with proper nourishment. On the other hand, sucking lice can be eliminated with proper grooming using natural dog shampoo and lime-sulfur dips as these lice or mites are more pervasive and are therefore more complicated to remove. Both these solutions have been proven effective and safe dog lice treatment methods.

Treating for mange on dogs and lice is not just a one-time deal, as there are eggs attached more stubbornly on hair shafts that can hatch and produce more lice in a week. These eggs are harder to remove and take more time to treat. That is why it is also extremely important to follow the dog lice treatment procedures to proper grooming. No solution is ever truly successful without a follow-up, right? There are various medicated soaps, sprays and powders out in the market which can be used in treating lice or preventing your dogs from ever getting them. Better to consult a veterinarian first before using these products on dogs so as not to end up aggravating their discomfort with an allergic reaction. They also help with dog mange to include Demodectic mange and canine Sarcoptic type.

Keeping their things clean and sterilizing their grooming tools, especially during an infestation are also effective dog lice treatment methods. Mites on skin and environmental decontamination can also be done to rid the environment of lice, ticks and fleas but is not always necessary. Placing your pet in quarantine when he’s infected by either mange on dogs skin lice or fleas can prevent the spread of the infestation to other unsuspecting dogs.

The Right Cure For Hot Spots On Canines

Some canines develop an itchy dog skin every few weeks, which seems to hurt them a lot. This issue can be particularly acute in summer; then the problem recurs regularly in a four week cycle. The skin turns extremely red in the affected area and even swells. The animals start scratching and lamenting due to the uncomfortable and burning sensation. A visit to the vet is usually inevitable, and his diagnosis is hot spots on dogs skin.

Hot spots on dogs are a locally circumscribed yeast infection that causes tremendous pain. The bacteria penetrates through minor injuries to the skin and then multiplies rapidly. A thick undercoat provides an ideal breeding environment for these organisms. That is why races like the Retriever or the German Shepherd are affected more often than those with a thinner fur.

skin infections and hot spots – treatments for infected dog skin

Hot spots on dogs may be treated, like mange, whether with antibiotics or steroids; however, they both should never be given combined. Unfortunately, this is still a common procedure among many veterinarians. Although cortisone helps to relieve the swelling of the dog skin, it also causes a temporary immune deficiency. The results are often relapses and the recurrence of flaky and itchy dog skin.

When treating canine hot spots, one first needs to clean the affected area, even though it may not look pleasant. Once air gets access to the inflamed body parts, the open wounds start healing the hot spots. One can support this process by bathing the canine in lukewarm water and using a medicated dog shampoo like RenuPlex. The give you dog digestive enzymes like SkinPlex to build up the immune system. ..

Cool chamomile or marigold tea is also suitable, as it soothes the itchy dog skin. One must work with great sensitivity while doing this, so the animal does not snap because of eventual pain. Until the hot spots on dogs dry out, one may also apply an anti-inflammatory, such as calendula cream or soft zinc ointment.

If the infection returns, it is essential that so-called sensitivity tests are made. The vet will take a little smear from the inflamed area and determine in the laboratory which antibiotic works best. With the right medication, the symptoms should disappear in the next seven days; however, treatment must be continued for at least 3 more weeks. For dogs with sensitive skin and the tendency to hot spots on dogs, a switch diet is recommended. This provides a healthy skin function and may aid preventing new hot spots.

Treating Mange in Dogs Effectively

Mange in dogs is a common skin condition that can result in significant distress in them. There are various forms of mange and each of them is caused by a specific kind of mite. Mange in dogs results in the irritation in their skin as a result of which they may excessively scratch the area. The problem will not subside until it is properly diagnosed and treated. The mites that are responsible for mange in dogs are quite small and can’t be seen with naked eye. The tell tale signs of mange are only indication that your dog is suffering due to mites.

We are discussing below different types of mange in dogs:

1. Sarcoptic Mange- This is a highly contagious type of mange and is also known as scabies. Sarcoptes Scabiei Canis mite is responsible for this mange and it can spread quickly amongst the infected animals. The biggest negative of sarcoptic mange is that it can even spread to the humans resulting in severe irritation and itching on the skin. However, the mite responsible for this form of mange is unable to reproduce on the human beings. This form of mange in dogs can cause intense hair loss, scratching. Aside from this, the tip of dog’s ear will also be crusted over. Often, veterinarians can diagnose this problem by judging the appearance of animal, though exact confirmation is done by taking a sample along with the scraping of dog’s skin.

Any dog that is affected by sarcoptic mange will get weekly injections of Ivermtcin for a month. However, treatment of sarcoptic mange with Ivermtcin depends upon the breed of the dog and few many have to be dipped in a solution contain insecticide and water. These dips can treat the problem from its roots. The sores on the skin of the affected dog can be treated with some ointment or cream recommended by a veterinarian.

Itching in the dogs suffering from the mange can be stopped to a great extent by using the Cortisone. Aside from this, every dog that has been exposed to a sarcoptic mange should definitely be treated even when they don’t show any symptoms. The surroundings should be properly cleaned for preventing any future infestations.

2. Demodectic Mange-This is also referred to as red mange and is the most common mange in dogs. It usually affects young dogs like puppies, and is caused by Demodex canis mite. This form of mange is not contagious but puppies mostly get these mites from their mothers. However, if a puppy is born without a mange, there is little chance that they will ever get it. Demodectic mange in dogs is not at all transferable to the human beings.

This form of mange in dogs is easily diagnosable if they have some hairless areas on their body. Mostly, demodectic mange clears on its own but recovery can be speeded up with proper treatment. In this form of mange in dogs, an insecticide dip can assist in killing the mites to a great extent.

3. Cheyletiella mange- Mostly puppies suffer from this type of mange and bigger mites are responsible for this condition. They can even be seen by seen by using a magnifying glass. Therefore, their diagnosis and treatment is much easier. An dandruff like substance often appears on the back of the puppies. This type of mange in dogs is contagious but last only for a short duration and may cause mild itching in your dog.

Getting rid of mange in dogs

Firstly, there is no need to remove or isolate a dog suffering from a demdectic mange. This form of mange in the dogs is only transferable from mother to the baby, so there is no chance of other dogs getting affected. But dogs suffering from sarcoptic mange should be isolated from other dogs without any delay. Aside from this, the bedding or other areas visited by the dogs should be properly cleaned. These steps are essential for ensuring that all the mites are properly killed and are not able to breed and cause sarcoptic mange in other dogs.

Preventing scabies, mange, and mites in dogs

Though all types of mange in dogs results due to infestation of mites, they can also occur due to a weak immune system or malnutrition. Most of the dog foods are cooked at very high temperatures resulting in the removal of omega fatty acids from the foods. You can mitigate the situation by providing omega fatty acid supplements for fortifying the immune system of your dog to ward of any mite infestation.

Many diet supplements from the reputable manufacturers have been around since decades and have a longstanding successful history of preventing and helping in the recovery from all kinds of mange. You can search for them on the internet and can even get exciting deals from several online sellers.

Home remedies for managing mange

* The fur of dog should be regularly brushed. This helps in the removal of skin and the scabs.
* The ears of dogs are quite susceptible to the mange attacks. You can treat the inside area of ears by using two tablespoons of yogurt that contain acidophilus and then rub it inside their ears.
* You can add a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to the meals of your dogs to treat them of mange.

You can also try herbal supplements such as astragalus, arabinogalactans and Echinacea for boosting their weakened immune system. You can give all these supplements orally to your do. You an also apply aloe vera, tea tree oil or pure vitamin E on the affected area to soothe out the skin. You should choose the products only from the reputable manufacturers.

Once you realize that your dog is suffering from a mange, you should take necessary steps for keeping him clean. You should bathe him often and keep his bedding clean and dry as this will help in keeping the mites from spreading quickly.

How Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and MSM Help Relieve Dog Pain

Dogs are friends, companions and guardians. They may walk on four legs and be covered with fur, but in many ways they are just like humans. Unfortunately, one of those similarities is that pets can experience painful hip problems dog arthritis, osteoarthritis. However, in recent years veterinary medicine has discovered the value of human supplements like glucosamine, Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) and chondroitin for dogs. Just like in humans, osteoarthritis results from wear and tear on the joints after years of repetitive use. Hip dysplasia, a common ailment in certain breeds of dog, is the result of a genetic malformation, but manifests similar symptoms.

Veterinarians recommend MSM, glucosamine and chondroitin for pets after their owners observe certain behaviors linked to dog arthritis. If your dog seems lethargic or has difficulty moving in normal ways, or if you notice your dog seeming less willing or able to participate in normal play activities, it may be time for a visit to the vet. Additionally, your dog may exhibit a visible limp or act as though he or she is in pain when being petted in certain areas. Again, compare this to the human reaction to ailments like arthritis or hip disorders like sciatica.

Best Remedies for arthritis in dogs and hip dysplasia

Glucosamine, MSM and chondroitin are all naturally occurring, which is why these substances are considered supplements rather than other pet medications. Glucosamine and chondroitin specifically appear in the fluid around the joints. When present, they promote smooth, natural movement. Production of these chemicals decreases as your dog ages. Eventually, the bones in the joints may begin to grind together worsening the dog arthritis. Over time, this creates the degenerative processes seen in osteoarthritis.

Veterinarians use glucosamine and chondroitin for dogs with hip dysplasia for similar effects, although the condition itself is not part of the aging process. Dogs with hip dysplasia are born with a misalignment that causes the bones to grind together from the time they are puppies. Because of this, the effects of hip dysplasia are similar to the effects of osteoarthritis.

MSM works differently than glucosamine and chondroitin for dogs suffering from these ailments. When naturally occurring in the body, MSM is a sulfer which serves to allow flexibility between proteins. Reduced production of MSM is also part of the natural aging process. Therefore, as a supplement, it helps replace what has been naturally lost, and is often given in conjunction with with glucosamine and chondroitin for dogs and humans suffering from arthritis caused by aging.

The fact that these are naturally occurring substances does lessen the potential danger to your dog. However, none of these supplements can cure osteoarthritis or hip dysplasia. Human studies have shown that this treatment has few or no side effects. MSM can cause reactions in human patients with sulfa drug allergies, but studies have yet to observe the same reaction in dogs.

In both dogs and humans, these substances are almost always given in combination when treating dog arthritis. The dual effects of promoting proper joint movement and relieving muscle pain create a cohesive treatment that has been shown in multiple studies to return normal, comfortable joint movement. As with any treatment, however, results may vary.

Glucosamine for Dogs with Arthritis

Canine osteoarthritis is an unfortunate ailment to befall a four-legged companion. Unfortunately, just like with humans, advanced age in canines can lead to health concerns, and canine osteoarthritis is one of the most commonplace items on the list. However, unlike humans, dogs cannot tell their human companions when they feel pain or are experiencing dog arthritis. They cannot voice their discomfort or ask for help when they need it; they rely on their human companions to know when they are in trouble. For this reason, it is important for dog owners to watch for the warning signs of canine osteoarthritis and take steps to ensure the comfort of their furry friends.

Dog Arthritis

The most common warning signs in dogs with osteoarthritis include lethargy, difficulty rising, and limping. A dog with osteoarthritis or dog arthritis suffers from deterioration of the joint cartilage, a potentially painful condition. Cartilage exists to create smooth, effortless joint movement, so when the cartilage deteriorates, the dog suffers from a limited range of motion followed by severe pain as the condition progresses. The deterioration of joint cartilage can also result in inflammation, causing the dog more suffering. No foolproof method exists to prevent canine osteoarthritis; even the healthiest dog who obtains regular exercise may suffer from osteoarthritis in old age. Nonetheless, when a dog suffers from the ailment, one of the treatment options available is Dog Glucosamine.

Glucosamine has had proven effects in humans suffering from arthritis pain and in controlled doses, it is also safe for dogs to ingest. Joint cartilage already contains Glucosamine, so introducing the medicine into a dog’s system will not put the animal at risk. Some medications boast anti-inflammatory properties, but Dog Glucosamine works by going straight to the arthritic joints and supplementing the deteriorating cartilage. The cartilage absorbs the Glucosamine, resulting in a lessening of joint inflammation that will help to relieve the dog’s pain. Furthermore, Glucosamine taken over long periods may also help the joint tissues to regenerate over time, and although every case is different, this can lead to a significant improvement in the dog’s health.

Dog Glucosamine comes in different forms to suit the needs of different dogs. For example, if the dog is accustomed to taking medication in pill form, Glucosamine capsules may be an appropriate choice. This can help with dosing, usually because some pet owners are hesitant to try medication in liquid form for fear of administering too much or too little at one time. However, if the dog resists medication and will not take the pill in food, a liquid form of Dog Glucosamine may be a better option. Pet owners can administer liquid Glucosamine mixed into regular meals to ensure quick ingestion, or they can take eye droppers and squeeze the Glucosamine directly into their dogs’ mouths to help with dog’s arthritis. The liquid form of Dog Glucosamine may also work more quickly, which can help animals with severe osteoarthritis receive faster pain relief.

The health of a beloved family pet is important to any dog owner. Seeing a pet in pain is tragic and while cases of canine osteoarthritis cannot always be prevented, the animal can receive relief from painful symptoms. Dogs treated with Dog Glucosamine usually see improvement in their joint functions within a month if the medication is provided consistently. Consistent medicating is important to ensuring their health and preventing relapses. Administering Dog Glucosamine twice a day with food is essential to providing the animal with the natural, fast-acting pain relief that they need for their deteriorating joints and to effectively combat dog arthritis and general canine aging.

Diagnosing Demodectic Mange

The cause of Demodectic Mange is a tiny mite known as the Demodex Canis. The mite cannot be seen with the naked eye and is most commonly passed to puppies through the mother within the first few days after birth. In normal conditions, these mites are not considered troublesome and do not result in mange. Mange only occurs when a puppy has an abnormal immune system that allows the mites to reproduce at higher than normal rates and multiply past the numbers that are considered helpful to canines. The most susceptible canines to this form of mange are older dogs with weakened immune systems or puppies with under developed immune systems. Some pure bred dogs are also at risk since there is evidence of an inherited susceptibility within certain breeds.

Dogs that show signs of demodectic mange may have areas of thinning hair around the eyes and lips. As the mange spreads, there may also be patches of thinning hair on the legs or feet. Less common, except in more advanced cases, is the thinning of hair on the torso or trunk of the canine.

Demodectic Mange

Localized demodectic mange, classified as five or less patches present on the dog, may heal itself within six to eight weeks. Of course, if the mange begins to generalize, treatment will be necessary. Generalized mange is determined by the presence of more than five patches of affected skin on the dog. With intensive treatment, dogs can overcome the disease as hair follicles are cleaned of dead skin cells and mites. In most cases, treatment of generalized mange may have to be repeated in order to return the dog to a healthy state.

The treatment of demodectic mange that has generalized can only be done with the supervision of a veterinarian. The dog must be bathed in a medicated shampoo and be treated with a miticide. The only approved miticide for dogs, Amitraz, can cause some alarming side effects that must be monitored closely. These side effects include drowsiness, extreme lethargy, staggering gaits, vomiting, and diarrhea. All of these conditions can indicate a life threatening situation for the dog. If any of these occur, it is important to rinse the miticide off the dog and contact a veterinarian immediately. It should also be mentioned that puppies are more likely to experience these side effects than an adult dog as they generally have weaker and more sensitive immune system.

Treatments For Dog Mange

Mange is a skin disease on dogs, and it is most of the time caused parasitic mites. It can cause worry among many dog owners because dogs that are experiencing this dreaded skin disease lose their hair. Apart from dogs, mange can also happen on other domestic and livestock animals, which include cat and sheep just to name a few. In some cases, mange can also happen to human, but they call it scabies. However, there is nothing for you to worry about because there are many dog mange treatments that can help lessen and completely remove this skin disease.

1. Many people think that they should isolate their dogs on the event that they are suffering from demodectic mange. However, this is not entirely correct because a dog can only transmit mange when a puppy sucks milk from his mother. It is also important for you to know that this does not happen all the time. On the event that the mother has mange, there are a lot of puppies who will grow out of the mange phase or period once their immune system matures. The dog who is suffering from demodectic mange must be shampooed with the help of a medicated shampoo for an extended period of time. You can also use sulfurated lime once or twice in a week depending on the severity of the condition of the dog mange.

2. One of the dog mange treatments for Sarcoptic mange is by applying Selamectin directly on the skin of the dog. You must also keep in mind that dogs that have Sarcoptic mange must be isolated from other dogs and humans because it is contagious. In addition, always keep his beddings clean to prevent infections. If you want, you can also give ivermectin to your dog. Although it is not licensed, it is most of the time used to improve Sarcoptic mange. However, you should not use it on herding dogs.

Dog Mange and treatments

There are many dog mange treatments available in the market, but it is still best to ask your veterinarian for advice on what you should do or give to your doctor. Once you see early signs of dog mange, bring your dog to a vet as early as possible to prevent more damage in the long run.

The Benefits of Glucosamine for Dogs Canine Arthritis and Joint Pain

As we age our joints begin to show the years of wear resulting in stiffness and pain. This is usually due to the deterioration of cartilage. Dogs also experience this condition which is called canine arthritis. Arthritis can be a natural event due to aging. It can also be due to a trauma to the joint. Whatever the cause of the pain, the results are a lack of mobility and activity due to pain caused by inflammation.

This leads to a downward spiral of the dog’s health. The dog is less likely to want to stay active when they are in pain. Staying active, however, is essential to a dog’s sense of well-being and physical health. Dogs cannot tell us when they hurt, but you can watch for visible cues. The obvious sign is a lack of desire to get up and move about. Limping and stiffness may also be seen.

Long-Term Use of Potentially Harmful Drugs

Many veterinarians prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to treat the pain. These drugs do nothing to resolve the cause of the pain which is the arthritis in the joint. To make matters worse, these drugs are usually used for long periods of time resulting in serious side effects. Treatment for most dogs with canine arthritis can go on for many years, especially if they start the drug at an early age. The larger the dog the more likely they will get arthritis when they are young.

Some veterinarians have started to prescribe the use of natural remedies for canine arthritis. Research has shown regular supplementation with glucosamine for dogs is as effective as aspirin to reduce the pain from inflammation. However, the added bonus to using glucosamine for dogs is that it not only reduces the pain but also repairs the damage by rebuilding the cartilage in the joint.

Using Glucosamine for Dogs

Glucosamine is a combination of amino acids and sugar. It is a naturally occurring substance in dogs, and humans, which the body uses to repair damaged cartilage. Some veterinarians believe when dogs have arthritis they do not have sufficient amounts of glucosamine to advance the repair process. Supplementing with glucosamine replenishes the body with those chemicals it needs.

Glucosamine supplementation is used to treat conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, disc degeneration and hip dysplasia. It has also been successfully used to treat sciatic nerve and inflamed disc disease. Glucosamine has also been used for medical conditions in dogs beyond joint issues.

Dosage and Treatment with Glucosamine

Using glucosamine for dogs effectively requires the consideration of several factors to see significant benefits. The dog’s weight and condition determines the amount of the dose. There are also three forms of glucosamine available. Research has shown glucosamine hydrochloride and glucosamine sulfate are the most effective.

The benefits of glucosamine supplementation can take as long as one to two months to become noticeable. Dogs generally will improve to varying degrees. However, research has shown if glucosamine is started during the early stages of the disease the benefits are greater. The FDA does not regulate glucosamine. Some companies will label products inaccurately. Purchasing from a reliable company can ensure that the potency and ingredients are as stated.

Although, some veterinarians still rely on potentially harmful drugs to treat the pain of canine arthritis, growing research has shown that glucosamine for dogs is a viable alternative. It has the added benefit of not only treating a dog’s pain and discomfort, but also repairs the damage caused by canine arthritis. When used according to manufacturer’s recommendations, most dogs improve within the first month.

What Causes Dog Mange

Dog mange is caused by microscopic mites that burrow under the top layer of skin on canines. There are both contagious and non-contagious varieties of mange that cause hair loss, itching and skin eruptions on dogs. When an animal has mites that are burrowing into their skin, the mites cause constant discomfort. Some dogs pull out their hair, scratch open wounds into their skin or snap unexpectedly at their owners.

More information on dog mange

Sarcoptic Dog Mange:Sarcoptic Canine Scabies is highly contagious to humans, cats and other species of animals. Whenever the Sarcoptes scabiei canis mite is present on dogs, it is important to isolate the animal immediately until treatments are underway. Topical parasiticidals are available without a prescription in pet-appropriate creams and shampoos. It is important to disinfect bedding, furniture and carpets to prevent recurring troubles with these contagious parasites.

Demodectic Dog Mange emodex canis mites are not contagious to humans or other animals. This type of mite is normally attracted to dogs that are malnourished or otherwise not in tip-top shape. Demodex canis mites live on top of the skin like a flea, and can be seen under a microscope. Topical parasiticidals are often used to eliminate this type of problem; however, home treatments should be followed with a trip to the vet to ensure that the dog does not have other health problems.

Breeds of Dogs that Have Excessive Hair Loss

All breeds of dogs lose hair, the primary difference is the amount of the dog hair loss. Dogs with longer hair seem to be the worst shedders, but usually this is simply because the hair follicle lost is larger. Dog hair loss rates are determined by diet, climate, health, hormones and cleaning habits.

There are hundreds of dog breeds around the world. Some are promoted as hairless breeds. Most of these have very short hair, which is still shed.

Breeds of dog with excessive hair loss:

Boxer
Cocker Spaniel
Dachshund
English Bulldog
Golden Retriever
Great Dane
Irish Wolfhound
Poodle
Shetland Sheepdog

Dogs have four different phases of hair growth:

+ Anagen
+ Catagen
+ Telogen
+ Exogen

The Anagen phase is where the growth occurs. The Catagen phase is an intermediate phase where the hair is resting. The Telogen phase is when the hair begins to regress. The Exogen phase is when shedding normally occurs. The growth rate is different on various parts of the body due to hormone and blood concentration.

Sunlight and temperature send signals to hormones in the dog’s body to control hair growth. With domesticated dogs remaining indoors more often, the growing and shedding cycles have become more even year-round.

Most dogs need to lose their hair so that a new seasonal coat can grow. Dogs have multiple hairs in each follicle so when it falls out there is a lot more hair. Dog hair loss can leave a mess on clothes, furniture and carpet. People with allergies might have serious outbreaks due to excessive dog hair loss.

Dog owners should accept normal shedding as a necessity and attempt to curb excessive or abnormal shedding. Damaged or unhealthy hair can lead to excessive shedding. Using dog hair care products with special enzymes and nutrients can create a healthier coat of hair.

Some dog hair products can remove old, loose hair so you can dispose of it properly, rather than have it all over the house. Special shampoos can also reduce shedding. Different diseases, infections and hormone imbalances can also cause abnormal hair loss. Treating these ailments properly can reduce excessive hair loss.

Prevent excessive shedding and hair loss with quality dog hair care products. If your dog is healthy, it will lose less hair.

Reasons behind Dog Shedding

There are many known explanation why dog shedding occurs. It doesn’t take a scientist to understand the usual causes of dog’s hair loss. But some dog owners may not know this little detail yet one of the very important reasons why dog shedding occurs. It is the called phases of dog shedding. A dog owner can easily perceive that a dog can shed abundant amount of hair when there is a change of season. Like for example during the winter periods, dogs shed their fur off easily. And even during spring or fall, dog still shed a lot of hair. How does the shedding happens?

Dog coats are consists of two layers. The first one is the longer outer layer or the overcoat and the second one is the thick, protective layer or the undercoat. The dog hair goes through three cycles: the anagen phase, the catagen phase and the telogen phase.

Shedding in Dogs and Hair Loss

Anagen as the first stage is the growth phase of the hair cycle during which new hair is formed. Next is catagen which is the transitional phase of the hair cycle between growth and the resting of the hair follicle. Lastly, the telogen phase is the resting phase of the follicle in the hair cycle where the hair that dies will finally fall off or sheds. The dog’s hair does not undergo the same phase simultaneously. Oftentimes, each section or area of the coat sheds more (or less) during a particular period. However, there are specific times of the year when the telogen phase is prevalent. During this period, massive shedding may be expected. Daylight exposure is known to influence this cycle. Dogs shed during winter because they need to condition their bodies for a warmer winter coat. As a result, it allows them to have better body temperature regulation to protect themselves from the harshness of winter. If they are exposed to artificial light indoors, dog shedding may continue throughout the year.

But, depending on the breed, dogs shedding still ought to embark on in the spring and fall. For the period of the spring, a dog owner can notice their dogs loose a bunch of hair. This is due to the dog losing its winter coat to prepare for the hotter days of spring and summer. Dogs also shed in the fall. This dog shedding is because the pet is losing his lighter, thinner coat to make way for the thicker hair that grows in for the winter. Many short-haired dogs shed year round, requiring constant clean up of pet hair.

Dogs are equipped with their climate adapting capabilities in order to survive the probable changes around them. Dog lovers really do care for them but there are some things humans cannot do to protect them like the natural way of dog shedding. Hair can really be a shield them when the scorching sun is lurking and it can also be a warm cozy blanket for them to snuggle in during the cold weather.

Grand Mal Seizures in Dogs

Seizures in dogs result from an abnormal or sudden in change in the dog’s neurological activity. The change in neurological activity can be caused by epileptic reasons or it can be a random occurrence. There is reason to believe that seizures in dogs can be an inherited trait as well. A dog that is experiencing a seizure is likely to be suffering from altered consciousness or total loss of consciousness.

The most typical type of seizure that dogs suffer is known grand mal seizures. A grand mal seizure is when the abnormal activity in the brain or body of the dog is not localized to one spot but it takes over the dog’s entire brain and body. There are typically 2 stages that occur in the normal grand mal seizure. The first stage is known as the Tonic stage, in this stage the dog usually loses consciousness, falls to the ground, will stretch out their legs in a rigid fashion and commence shaking in their muscles. This stage will usually last 10-30 seconds and the dog will typically quit breathing.

Subsequent Stages of grand Mal Seizures in Dogs

The 2nd stage of the seizure is known as the Clonic phase, which is characterized by rapid uncontrollable movement of the legs and chewing of air. Both of the stages will also display salvation, defecation and dilated pupils. Once these two stages are over, the dog will usually act sluggish and or appear drugged for some amount of time. Usually the dog will sleep it off. This is characterized as a grand Mal dog seizure

In the worst form of this type of seizure, a dog can experience one seizure and not fully recover from the initial seizure before having another one. These are known as “Status Epilepticus” and if these are not treated quickly, the result can be fatal. Like the basic grand mal seizure, the Status Epilepticus also comes in stages. The first stage is called Prodome and this is when the dog may become “clingy” and follow their owner around. The next stage is known as Aura and this when the pet tends to whine, hide, wander or vomit. The 3rd stage is called the Ictus stage and this is when the seizure actually occurs and usually brings salivation, uncontrollable muscle cramping and shaking and possibly loss of consciousness. Similar to the typical grand mal seizure, the Status Epilepticus seizure has a recovery stage and it is called the Post-Ictal phase. In this phase, the dog will usually appear blind or drugged or some just sleep for an extended period of time. The Post-Ictal phase has a chance of lasting several days.

In either form of a grand mal seizure, responding in a calm and appropriate way is imperative in the recovery of the dog. Try to make the environment as soothing and calm as possible, it is suggested to dim the lights and try to obtain total silence. It’s also a good idea to note if there were any triggers to the seizure or events that led up to the seizure. It is also highly suggested that your dog seeks medical attention. A veterinarian can assess the dog’s condition by a series of tests and scans including an EEG and an X-Ray. The series of seizures cannot ever be fully cured, but the symptoms can be inhibited by oral medications. SeizureGuard is a great supplement to help your dog control and fight back from seizures and epileptic attacks.

Common Dog Skin Problems

There are various skin conditions and problems that can be caused by numerous things. For example, skin allergies are a major problem in dogs and they can be caused by everything from heredity, type of breed, to being exposed to something in their environment. Environmental problems can come from exposure to chemicals , an inhalant, or anything else in the environment. Dog skin problems can also come from insects, such as ticks, fleas, and bug bites can harm the skin and cause major skin problems in dogs.

When allergens cause dog skin problems the outer layer of the skin is typically affected. The biggest sign of problems will be intense itching and discomfort for the dog. This type of intense skin problem will make dogs uncomfortable, snappish, and they will become unpleasant to be around. When these signs are available treatments should be done for the dog to help relieve them of problems. If you suspst dog mange it is best to visit a veterinarian.

Dry Skin, Dog Mange, and Other Skin Problems on Dogs

Hives are going to be one of the most common dog skin problems people see. Hives are normally an allergic reaction where circular, itchy, and raised welts will appear on the skin and face of the dog. Hair can also start sticking out in little patches and the eyelids can swell up.

The most common skin problem that occurs in dogs is flea allergy dermatitis . When fleas bite dogs the saliva from the fleas interacts with the skin and causes problems. People will notice this condition when the skin in dogs becomes red, inflamed, and itchy. This happens in areas where fleas are most commonly at which includes the belly, rump, base of the tail, and under the legs. If left untreated dogs will continue to chew at these areas causing hair loss, dry and scaly skin, and infected patches. Checking for dog mange, fleas and flea eggs plus skin problems is the best way to diagnose dogs with this problem.

Dog skin problems can also include yeast infections. These normally occur on the ears or paws because yeast has the ability to grow in those areas. Irritated, itchy, and discolored skin are the most common signs that this skin problem is occurring. Again, these conditions can lead to dog mange.

Bacterial folliculitis can occur by itself or in association with other skin problems. This is an infection that can cause sores, bumps, and scabs on the skin in numerous different spots. These sores are visible and can be identified by the red and bumpy color. They are obviously easier to see in short haired dogs. This might be first noticed in long haired dogs when their coat becomes discolored and dull. Also hair might start to fall out showing the skin problems underneath.

Dog Mange is one of the most devastating dog skin problems that can occur. Mange is caused by little mites and is a bacterial infection. Mange can be transferred from one dog to another making treatment very important. Symptoms are going to include intense itching, incredible discomfort, red and irritated skin, sores, and extreme hair loss. A dog’s face, ears, and legs are commonly affected and there are different types of mange that can cause skin problems.

Best Methods to Treat Hip Dysplasia in Dogs

Hip dysplasia is the loosening of muscles, connective tissue and ligaments that support the hip joint. This can lead to the leg bone and pelvic bone separating from each other. It is the equivalent of arthritis in humans, and very painful. Treating hip dysplasia in dogs may entail medication and surgery, plus addressing a few issues that may lessen pain.

Treating hip dysplasia in dogs can be very expensive, but choices must be made. The early, necessary interventions include weight management, viable exercise, warmth and massage/physical therapy. Keeping a dog’s weight at an acceptable level will take extra pressure off the joint. Low impact exercise such as leash walks, swimming, walking on a treadmill and slow jogging provide good range of motion and muscle building with less wear and tear on the affected area. Cold, damp weather can aggravate arthritis pain, so the dog needs a warm dry place to exist and sleep, like an orthopedic foam bed. The veterinarian can teach a dog owner how to massage the muscles around the joint with the fingertips in small, circular motions.

Canine Hip Dysplasia in Dogs Can be Treated

Medication is a less invasive way to treat hip dysplasia in dogs than surgery. Oral supplements are given to build cartilage, and anti-inflammatory medicines reduce swelling. They may also enhance structural integrity of the connective tissue. Glucosamine and chondroitin are commonly added to food and also used in humans for arthritis. Injections might prevent the breakdown of cartilage and increase the viscosity of joint fluid in the hip joint.

xray of a dogs hip

The last resort, but maybe most effective treatment is surgery. There are four specific types of surgeries and two are for puppies and not adult dogs. A third type is best for dogs under forty pounds, and the last type is a total hip replacement. Surgeries are very costly, of course, but may be the only way to relieve the dog’s pain and allow healing enough to walk again.

The diagnosis of hip dysplasia must come from a veterinarian’s exam and x-rays, and the recommended treatment will depend on the findings. Treating hip dysplasia in dogs is many-faceted, but often effective and successful. It can extend a dog’s life and comfort immeasurably.

What is Jojoba Oil?

Jojoba oil is a liquid wax produced inside the seeds of jojoba plants. Jojoba is a shrub native to the desert southwest and Mexico. People turned to jojoba oil in the early 1970s, when a ban on whaling oil in the United States made it necessary to find a substitute. As it happens, people soon discovered that jojoba oil was actually superior to whale oil in many regards. Today it is not only used to help moisturize peoples skin, it also has great benefits helping to treat dog skin problems.

Not only can jojoba oil moisturize your dog’s skin, jojoba oil is also a natural fungicide, killing off any fungal infections your dog might have on his skin without relying upon drugs that might have unpleasant side effects.

Where to Find Our Jojoba Oil for Dogs Skin Problems and Itching
