How to teach a dog to roll over?

When we get ourselves a new pet dog, the thought of training him never crosses our head. We are so engrossed in celebrating the new addition in the house that we forget about the level of commitment it takes to raise a dog. Sure, dogs can be our best friends, but these best friends have to be taught how to live in civilization. There are a series of basic commands that the dogs have to be taught to follow in order to handle them well. Sitting, standing, eating, toilet training and rolling over are some of the examples of these crucial commands.

In order to train the dog at anything, you need to be absolutely patient and supportive. Hence, it is advised that you choose a day when you have no appointments in order to get started with teaching the dog a few tricks. When teaching a dog about complex commands like rolling over, the basic commands like ‘sit’ and ‘stand’ come very handy. Some dogs prefer to stay home while the others are more outdoorsy. If you are about to train your dog at home, ensure that you stash away all your expensive carpets in a safe place to keep them from getting soiled.

In the whole process of training your pooch, be very calm and composed. Losing temper and getting aggressive with the dog will only make your chances of teaching the dog slimmer. Also, it is not necessary that the dog learns everything you want him to in one day. If the dog is not following instructions one day, try some other day when he is in a better mood. To teach a dog about rolling over, you might need to start with asking the dog to sit down or lie down, whichever command he is acquainted with.

Once your pet dog is in sitting or lying position, you can roll him over manually so that he knows what it means to roll over. Going through the same action around 5-6 times will help the dog in being able to roll over perfectly. However, the process of teaching about rolling over to a dog is not as simple as it looks. If your dog is the mischievous kinds, he might manage to damage your furniture if you are training him at home. It is thus advised to train dogs either outdoors or in an empty spacious room.

Pet dogs are just like toddlers, a little bit of appreciation and pampering is the sure shot way of getting them to do anything. While the dog is correctly rolling over, constantly appreciating him will help you teach him the activity in half the time. But how will you manage to hold the dog’s attention for so long? Simple, hold his favourite candy in your hand. The candy in your hand will act as a catalyst in training the dog because as long as the candy sits in your hand, you will have the privilege of absolutely undivided attention from your pooch. When you are satisfied with the rolling over tactics of your dog, you can give the candy to him as a gesture of appreciation. This generosity will not only help the dog in following future instructions to roll over, but also to be more receptive to further training.
