How to teach a dog to play dead

Teaching your dog to play dead is really a fun for you as well as for your dog. It is absolutely a false notion that an old age dog cannot learn new tricks. To play dead can be taught to the dog of an age because most of the dogs love to lie down and play dead. Train your dog with positive reinforcement as it will yield better results in less time. Mind well that your dog wants to please you so; you should show him affection and treats when he performs his task correctly.

If you instruct your dog to lie down anytime, he may not obey you. So, better take your dog on a walk or play games which will make him tire and will get ready to lie down on the ground.

Try to train your dog with new tricks by making fun and always reward your dog with good treats of his choice. You should also encourage your dog to perform a new trick by praising him. Offering food treat will be useful to teach a dog to play dead. Before training the new tricks, first master your dog with the basic obedience skills. For example, you cannot give a lie down command to the dog without making him understand about the command to sit.

To teach a dog to play dead, first command the dog to sit. Hold the treat before his nose and then quickly move it towards the floor or the ground. Give the “Down” command when you lower the treat. The dog will then try to take the treat and will lie down on the ground. Now see on which side your dog is lying on the ground. Take a treat in front of your dog’s nose and move it in a circle. Your dog will also turn around following the treat with his nose. Give the command to “roll over” and push him on his back by praising him in a happy and humble voice. Let the dog feel that he has done a great thing and will learn to play dead gradually.

Do not forget to reward the best treat to your dog, when he stays lying on the ground or floor. Repeat this process for several times until your dog lie down and roll by your command.

Once your dog masters a simple roll over, instead of moving your hand in a circular way, hold a treat in front of his nose and then move away from the dog. Instruct him to move further in the lying position or by rolling on the ground. In this way, the dog will get good practice of playing dead and will love this to do frequently.

The dog cannot follow the new trick immediately so, repeat these steps several times. Keep trying and do not get discourage if your dog does not understand quickly. When the training is complete, you will see that your dog is enjoying rolling over the ground and has learnt to play dead.
