How to Teach a Dog to Jump

After teaching your dog the basic commands like sit and stay, heel, the jump command would become easy for the owner to teach. Dogs love to jump. So, teach your dog to jump like playing a game.
You need to begin with a bar to start the one type of jump. Then after, you can add variety of bars to teach jumping to the dog. In the beginning, take a leash and hold it with both your hands. Set the leash to the lowest level so that the dog can easily cross over it. Give the jump command and instruct your dog to cross over this hurdle. Perform each action over and over again to get trained perfectly. As the dog masters jumping by placing the leash at the lowest level, gradually raise the level and keep practicing the dog with different levels.
Remember while teaching the jump command; never refuse the dog to jump. Raise the level of the bar only after the dog gets fully trained with one level. If the dog barks, lower the leash level until the dog can easily cross over it. Also, ensure that you use a solid leash or any other objects which will not fall or break if the dog hits it accidently. If proper care is not taken then even you may get hurt or your dog can get afraid of jumping from then next time.
If your dog does not follow the jump command and runs around the leash, do not reward him. Instead place the leash against the wall or furniture so; there will be no choice for the dog except jumping the hurdle.
Gradually make it more challenging as your dog gets proficient. Try to increase the number of bars and place them keeping some distance between the two. You can also increase the distance between the two bars to make your dog more proficient. The dog will really enjoy this game. Get your dog excited and make him jump over multiple objects. As the dog gets aware of the basic idea, you can make him jump through a tire or a hoop. Along with providing coaching of jumping to your dog, also offer them good treats like few pieces of dry kibble, chicken, cheese or liver or anything else that your dog loves to eat.
If you feel that your dog is perfectly obeying the jump command, you can make your dog perform the exercise by its own with you holding the lead. When the dog jumps, be sure to hold the lead properly.
Be sure not to run while the dog is approaching the hurdle. This will excite the dog and will not co-operate with you. Train your dog to jump with fun and enthusiastically. If you get frustrate while teaching your dog to jump, stop and play a game that your dog enjoys like fetching the toys or playing with a ball. Try to follow the above steps in order to teach your dog to jump with ease.
