Dogs are given the position as a man’s best friend. So, try to teach different things to the dog so that it remains active. The pet dogs love to grab things like food placed on the table, a ball and many such things and play with them. The dogs always try to chew the things that they grab. So, it is better to teach them how to fetch the things and then throw that thing away to play again in the next round.
Teaching a dog how to fetch can be start off with a small stick. The reason behind of using a stick is that it gives a resemblance of a bone and easy to retrieve once it is thrown on the ground. As the dogs get easily distracted by the surroundings, you can make them teach about fetching the things in a small open area covered with a boundary like a garden or the backyard or in an alley in the beginning. This will make the dogs feel free to enjoy and no danger of the other animals.
In the initial stage, after throwing a stick to a short distance, the owner should walk along with the dog and pick up the stick. So that the dog gets an idea of what the owner want his dog to do. Then onwards the owner should first inhale the thing to the dog which is to be thrown and then throw it some yards away. Since the animals can easily search out the things by its smell, the dog will bring back the right thing to you. After this is done right, reward the dog with few dog biscuits.
The other way of teaching your dog how to fetch is by the use of your voice as well as hand signals. For this, the owner should call the dog to get its attention and raise the stick in the air. It is then thrown so the dog can see the direction in which the stick is thrown. Once the dog completes this task correctly, continue practicing this by throwing it to far areas then the previous ones. This process requires some time so it is advised to keep more sticks around in case if some are lost. Gradually, increase the throws in a bigger area. You can choose either a big garden or a beach side or any huge open space. Practice the same kind for several times so that the trick of fetching things gets perfectly fit in the dog’s mind.
Then after, you can use a rubber ball or a tennis ball for teaching the dog how to fetch it. You can also use small toys which the dog loves to play with so that the dog does not get pain while placing it on its teeth.
The main thing to be remembered is that the owner should keep enough patience while teaching a dog because it takes some time for the dog to learn a new trick. Also, do not forget to reward the dog with some biscuits when the task is performed in a correct way.
