How to cure a smelly dog

How to stop a dog from smelling

Preventing dog odor. We all love our pet dogs and they prove to be ideal companions for us, giving and receiving love unconditionally. Our dog is the type of dog that will be sure to sit by our side, regardless of how we are feeling – we can be mad, happy, annoyed.  It makes no difference he is the one who silently bears our cantankerous mood swings.  Dogs also feel lucky to have a loving family who is responsible for their good and bad. Their family will do everything needed for the welfare of the dog and it is the family members with whom the dog will share home, sofa, couch and even bed.

No matter how well groomed and clean a dog is, dogs will be dogs and they will always come with that obnoxious smell of theirs. Some dogs have a natural propensity to roll around and dig into whenever they get a chance. If your dog has rolled into something that has despicable smell or if he has dug a dead animal, he will surely carry its odors inside your house and this will be a tough situation for all your family members.

Not all dogs smell bad and some smell bad only sometimes – like when they have not had a dog bath in a long time.   Yet even the best kept and “cleanest” dog may still smell.  So much in fact that it becomes uncomfortable for us to be in the same room or near by.  Therefore, you need to identify the reason why the dog is smelling so much. Some of the causes of dog odor are:

Fur: As a first step towards preventing your dog from smelling bad, you need to observe its fur. It may contain some dried feces or any other smelly things.

Anal Area: Give attention to the dog’s anal area and if needed, trim hair from this part of their body. A dog may also smell bad due to impacted anal glands. In this case, no bathing will be successful in removing the odor. The anal glands will need to be expressed and then only, you can get rid of the smell.

Infected ears: This can also be a reason for bad smell from the dog. As this odor can also not be removed through bathing, this condition will need to be treated which will be very painful for your beloved pet.

Flatulence: It can also be a consequence of flatulence which will go on its own after some time.

Medical condition: Some dogs also smell bad because of some medical reasons. The dog may be going through a kidney disease or diabetes which can lead to canine halitosis. In simple words, this condition is known as bad breath.

Dental condition: Dental diseases and infected gums can produce stinking odor all around the dog which can be too uncomfortable for the people sitting near the dog. In this case, you have to consult a qualified veterinarian who will suggest proper medication to the dog.

It is not needed to bathe him every day as this may remove the dog’s natural oils. But if you are living with a dog in the same house, then bathing can become necessary. If you are bathing your dog, do that with warm water and mild shampoo. There are some kinds of odors that cannot be removed through simple bathing. In such a situation, it is advisable to add baking soda or Omega 3 to the dog shampoo, this will do the trick.

Only after identifying the reason of smell from your dog, will you have a handle of what it will take to get rid of the bad smell.  We suggest a high quality organic shampoo as they have enzyme eaters that destroy the bad smell – not just mask it.   Good luck with treating your dog and making him or her smell better.
