Why Dogs Get Allergies?
Like human beings dogs too are prone to allergies. Most of the pet owners complain of dog allergies. The skin of the dogs is more sensitive as compared to human beings. You will often notice quite a bit of dog scratching; this is one of the first sign that your pet may have allergies. As much as 80% of the allergies in dogs are caused due to their exposure to the environment. Some dogs may be allergic to the chemical contents in the cleaning agents that are used in the house. The pollens in the environment come in contact with the skin of the dog and may cause several allergies like:
Bacterial Allergies: This is the most common of all. The dogs are allergic to staph bacteria. Dogs that have a good immune system will not be much affected by these bacteria. But dogs with a weaker immune system will develop skin infection called pyoderma. Symptoms for this allergy are itching, hair loss and circular lesions. If you find lesions on the body of the dog, you should take it to the vet. Generally, in case of bacterial infection, the vet may prescribe antibiotics. Ensure that you complete the entire course of medicines as advised by the vet; else there are chances of the infection appearing again.
Flea Saliva Allergy: The flea bites the dog and the saliva of the flea causes irritation on the skin of the dog. It can cause severe itching and hair loss in the dog.
Inhalant Allergies: The dog could be allergic to various elements present in the air such as pollens, weeds, dust, mites etc. The first symptom, in case of inhalant allergy can be seen on the skin. The dog will scratch the body, there will be hair loss and the dog may lick the feet continuously. If the allergy is due to grass, then the simple remedy would be to wash the feet of the dog immediately after coming home. Bathe the dog with a natural shampoo so that the dust and the pollen cannot settle on the body and cause allergy. If the allergy is caused due to mites, then you should ensure that the house is kept free of mites. Your vet may generally prescribe anti inflammatory medicine.
Food Allergies: Generally, food allergies are not common in dogs. The dog may throw up the food in case of allergy. Food allergies cannot be determined easily. If you feel that your dog is allergic to food, then you must stop giving the particular food item altogether.
Since most of the issues first affect the skin, it is necessary to keep the skin of the dog free from germs or bacteria. Many times you will notice that your dog is shedding excessively. The easiest method of doing this is giving a bath to the dog at least once in a week. You also need to brush the dog every day. Brushing removes the dust particles from the body and protects against likely dog allergies and infections. If the symptoms of the allergy aggravates, then you will have to take your dog to a vet immediately.
