Labrador retriever History and Qualities

History of Labrador retriever when traced dates back to 1700s. It originated from Newfoundland, the two breeds namely Lesser Newfoundland and Greater Newfoundland. The dogs are named as Lesser and Greater St. John respectively. Greater St. John dogs are used for hardy chores like hauling fish carts along with a driver. They do the work in dog-team chores. This stopped the dog enthusiasts from importing the Labrador retriever. In 1903 the Labrador retrievers were recognized as a distinct breed by the English Kennel Club. The American Kennel Club also recognized the Labrador Retrievers are a different breed.

The Labrador Retrievers are asked to maintain its quality and purpose. They need to pass the requirements of the Labrador retriever club and procure a certificate that it has met its standards. The motive behind the standard checking is that some breeders breed dogs without quality. They have very bad health conditions like retinal dysplasia, hip dysplasia and peripheral retinal atrophy.

Qualities of Labrador Retrievers

Labradors come in shades of black, yellow and chocolate. The males are 65 to 80 lbs and females weight around 55 to 70 lbs. Every Labrador can be recognized by its temperament, head, tail and coat. The dogs generally have two coats - one inner coat which keeps them dry and warm coat and the outer coat which repels the water. The dogs generally have a thick tail which tapers towards the end. They have a clean cut head and broad hanging ears. They are highly alert and intelligent.

Labrador Retrievers are generally kind, loving, and friendly dogs. They cannot be used as guard dogs because of their friendly nature. They usually bark and jump at strangers and later calm down.

There are two lines of Labradors namely Field Lines and Show Lines. Field Lines are used for hunting as they have more energy. Show Line Labradors are used for hunting. They have a gentle temperament.

Labrador Retrievers have to be thoroughly trained. Training is easy and fun. A big backyard is very much essential while training. It is also essential that you take the dog for walks. Avoiding training makes the dog destructive or to run away to lessen their energy and boredom.
