History of Beagles

Choosing a perfect dog for a home with small kids can be a very difficult task. Among the many small dogs that prove to be good pets for kids, Beagles are the most popular. Their eagerness and temper please the owners and this makes Beagles an ideal dog for any indoors.

History of Beagles: The Beagles became extremely popular in US during the 1950’s but their roots can be dated back to around 400 BC.   The being of these beagles at that time has been shown in historical content.  These dogs probably originated during early 2nd century in England where royal class kept these hounds as hunting aids and tools. Beagles are very adept to sniff creatures and lure them to the place where their master hunter is waiting. Today’s Beagles can also be used for hunting but for the most part, they are enjoyable family pets.

Beagles often have enzyme issues - try a good dog enzyme if they do.

In the middle of 1800s, Beagles started being bred and today we have dogs which are beautiful as well as competent hunters. It was this time when the Beagles came into US as General Richard Rowett imported these dogs from England. A National Beagle Club got established in the year 1888 and since then, these dogs have been a popular breed especially for their skills, temperament and looks. Beagle dogs are depicted in the popular culture since the times of Elizabethan age in the paintings and literature. Later, they have also been seen in comic books, television and films. Snoopy from Peanuts, a comic strip, is promoted as the most famous beagle in the world.

Qualities and features of Beagles: Beagles can be medium to small sized dogs. Although they look similar to a Foxhound, it has softer and longer ears and shorter legs. These are scent hounds which are naturally skilled in tracking down animals such as rabbits, and other types of games. They have an excellent sense of smelling and have an instinct to track which gives them employment as the detection dogs to prohibit foodstuffs and agricultural imports in quarantine throughout the world.

These are very popular pets especially because of their size, temper and less number of inherited health related problems.  As a result of the Beagles natural characteristics Beagles are also used for special missions such as finding survivors in earthquakes or natural disasters.  As far as scenting is concerned, they are much more adapt to smell and seek out smells on the ground – in fact that is how we often visualize them, with there nose to the ground smelling back and forth.  As a result they atypically do not do mountain rescues where they have to smell in the open air.  Their large lips and long ears help them to trap the smell close to their nose. These dogs are known to have a gentle and temper disposition, are amiable and they are neither too aggressive nor too timid. They usually enjoy company and even if they do not mix up with strangers initially, they are easy to win over.

If you want to have a Beagle in as your family pet, then you can be assured that you are getting a pet with a colorful and rich history. Whether you are going to use it for hunting or you want a companion for yourself and your children, these dogs will be the best investment from your part.
