Dog mites’ is the popular term for Mange. If dogs get them, severe irritation will surely take place and with this, inflammation symptoms, hair loss, and itchiness will be noticed. You might be wondering how mites on dogs do their damage; it is by getting into the dog’s skin through hair follicles and also the oil glands which are located in the epidermal layer. When this occurs, the immune system suffers and may even cause life threatening illnesses.

Mange and sarcoptic mites

You might have heard of the term ‘scabies’ that humans sometimes have. This is also a type of sarcoptic mange and is an ugly form of it. These types of mites are transferred as quickly as sand; all that is needed if for them to be blown to other animals. Sarcoptic mites resemble spiders and ticks which also belong in the same classification of Arachnida class. • Dog mites, whether male or female, cause damage and they mate on the host’s skin surface. When this is done, male mites die and the female mites go back under the host’s skin. They will then lay eggs through the tunnels they created and die shortly afterward. The host is the one providing nutrition to these eggs by their blood serum. After 4-8 days, they hatch and become larvae molt and further- to nymphs. Mites on dogs become adults within 2 weeks or 14 days. During this phase it is very important to continue to use a medicated dog shampoo. They continue to thrive and survive by the host’s blood supply and the process goes on and on.
